Celebrating Nat Turner

One of my favorite people in history, that isn’t talked about too often. He is not recognised in the schools, or anywhere else.

Nat Turner, and his supporters are described as blood thirsty wolves. He is also found to be described as a fanatic preacher, whom rebelled without cause.

His moment in history, means so much in my present. I believe that having an insight on your past, helps us understand our present and our future.

As I was introduced to certain issues, as a child in a variety of classes. I’d often wondered why I only heard of the horrendous attacks, that were placed upon my ancestors.

It produced anger, and that put me in a position of having no interest in learning the history of america.

I knew there should have people out there fighting back. But, why didn’t I hear about them?

I questioned, how so many people could be enslaved and not fight back. The only individual I was taught about in reference to rebellion, was Harriet Tubman. Which was awesome 😉

Yet, it was not good enough. It took over twenty years, to gather the information I am aware of.

On top of that!

I’m learning of new people, places and amazing accomplishments, of our people on a daily.

Little did I know. People like Nat Turner, existed. Yet, this history is kept away, and hidden so that we are not aware of the courageous individuals that lived before us.

It is kept away, and meant to disappear. Xspanding Minds, looks forward to keeping these amazing past events in the mainstream.

Turner, is one of those amazing people that should be celebrated!

Nat Turner, is known for his part in history which he orchestrated a slave rebellion on August 21, 1831.

Born on October 2, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia. He was known as a gifted child, early in his life. He found pleasure in reading, and he became a firm believer in the Bible.

It is said, he heard voices from God and saw visions of black and white figures going through some form of fighting. He took this as a sign, and decided to do what he thought was his responsibility.

He was known as the “Prophet” among the slaves. Articulate, strong built, and naturally persuasive. He gathered a group of supporters, and they set out to massacre all individuals whom were responsible for the enslavement of the black person.

He went from house to house, killing men, women and children. There was no discrimination, he set out to complete a mission and these are the circumstances that came about.

He did allow several whites to live during this attack. Those people were spared, due to them feeling as if they were as vulnerable as any black woman or man.

Turner, was able to be on the run after this event for about two months. He was captured by a farmer. He was swiftly tried, and set to be executed by hanging. He died on October 11, 1831.

After this event, over 56 blacks were executed and about 200 people whom had no involvement in the revolt were killed.

This story speaks of much blood shed, but hey..

That’s the history in the United States 😏
